Parliament has proposed an additional UGX 263.937 billion in the 2026/27 National Budget Framework Paper to support the operations of the incoming 12th Parliament, including the purchase of vehicles for 529 Members of Parliament.

Rt Hon Thomas Tayebwa -Deputy Speaker.

The request was presented by Hon. Remigio Achia, Vice Chairperson of Parliament’s Budget Committee, while tabling the committee’s report before Parliament. According to the report, each legislator would receive a vehicle valued at UGX 315 million, aimed at facilitating effective execution of legislative, oversight, and representation functions.

Hon. Achia noted that the vehicles are critical in enabling MPs to reach constituencies, conduct oversight activities, and engage with citizens, especially in remote and hard-to-reach areas.

In addition to vehicle procurement, the proposed funding will cater for the rental of additional office space to accommodate the expanded Parliament, as well as insurance coverage for lawmakers’ spouses, children, and parents, which Parliament says is intended to support the welfare of legislators during their term of service.

The funding request comes at a time when Uganda has concluded its general elections and is preparing for newly elected leaders to assume office, marking the start of a new legislative term. Government has emphasized the need for continuity, institutional readiness, and effective service delivery as the country advances its development agenda.

The proposal will be subjected to further debate and scrutiny as Parliament considers the National Budget Framework Paper, with emphasis on aligning expenditures to national priorities and ensuring value for public resources.
