Kampala — The Kampala High Court has once again postponed its ruling on a bail application filed by veteran opposition leader Dr Kizza Besigye, deepening uncertainty in a politically sensitive treason case that has continued to draw sharp criticism from his supporters and rights activists.

The ruling, which had been scheduled for delivery at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, was deferred to December 29 following a late directive issued by the trial judge, Justice Emmanuel Baguma, shortly after 4:00 p.m. The development was confirmed through a statement shared on social media by Winnie Byanyima, Dr Besigye’s wife.

According to Byanyima, no explanation was provided for the delay, a move she strongly criticised, describing it as an act of “total disrespect and insensitivity.” She noted that family members, lawyers, supporters and political allies had waited the entire day in anticipation of the court’s decision, only to learn of the postponement hours later.

Dr Besigye, a four-time presidential contender and long-time critic of the government, is facing treason-related charges in a case that has attracted both national and international attention. His continued detention and the repeated adjournments of key court decisions have raised concerns among opposition figures, civil society organisations and legal observers, who argue that the delays undermine confidence in the judicial process.

Outside court, supporters expressed frustration over what they termed as a pattern of postponements in politically sensitive cases. Several opposition leaders and activists have maintained that the handling of the matter reflects broader challenges within the justice system, particularly where high-profile opposition figures are involved.

The state has previously defended its position, arguing that the case involves serious national security concerns. However, defence lawyers have insisted that Dr Besigye meets all the legal requirements for bail, including having fixed places of abode and substantial sureties.

As the country awaits the December 29 ruling, political tension remains high, with opposition parties calling for transparency, respect for due process and timely delivery of justice. The outcome of the bail application is expected to have significant political and legal implications, especially as Uganda approaches another charged political period.

For now, Dr Besigye remains in custody as his supporters continue to press for his release and demand accountability from the courts.
