The Uganda Police Force has confirmed the death of Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIGP) Charles Kataratambi, who passed away Thursday evening at Nakasero Hospital after a prolonged illness. He was 63.
According to police authorities, AIGP Kataratambi had been battling health complications, including diabetes, and had been under specialized medical care prior to his passing.
A Distinguished Career
Kataratambi joined the Uganda Police Force in 2001 as a cadet officer and steadily rose through the ranks. Over the course of his career, he held several key positions, serving in the Criminal Investigations Directorate (CID), Media Crimes Unit, Land Protection Unit, Flying Squad, and the Special Investigations Division (SID).
At the time of his death, he was serving as the Director of Human Rights and Legal Services, where he focused on strengthening the police’s compliance with human rights standards and legal frameworks.
Colleagues described him as a dedicated and versatile officer, whose experience across different departments made him an important pillar within the force.
Tributes and Condolences
The Deputy Inspector General of Police, Maj. Gen. Geoffrey Katsigazi Tumusiime, said the force had lost “a senior officer of great institutional memory and experience.”
“His contribution to law enforcement and the development of the Uganda Police Force will be remembered. We stand with his family and loved ones during this difficult time,” Katsigazi said.
Tributes also poured in from across the country, with many describing him as a firm, resilient, and professional officer who served the nation for more than two decades.
Funeral Arrangements
The Police Force has announced that it will work closely with the family of the late AIGP Kataratambi to coordinate burial arrangements, which will be communicated in due course.
A Legacy in Service
From his early days as a cadet officer to his final role in the police’s top management, AIGP Charles Kataratambi’s career spanned nearly 25 years. He will be remembered as a committed servant of the nation who dedicated his life to law enforcement and the pursuit of justice.
